Late news, 30th Jan. St. Ives Bay: 1 Glaucous Gull (1w), 1 Iceland Gull (1w), 1 Balearic Shearwater, 1 Manx Shearwater, 2 Great Skua, 5 Great Northern Diver, 3 Black-throated Diver, 4 Red-throated Diver, Purple Sandpipers, Mediterranean Gulls, 1 Black Redstart (f), 2 Curlew, 1 Kestrel and 1 Sparrowhawk, plus 1 Bottlenose Dolphin and 2 Grey Seal.
As in recent days feeding events were concentrated during the first couple of hours of daylight, mainly focussed along the reef northwest of Godrevy Island, off Clodgy Point and north of St Ives Head. The aggregation northwest of Godrevy Island comprised approx 20 Gannet and up to 50 Kittiwake, whilst the others comprised up to 40 Gannet, 20 Herring Gull, 5 Shag and 20 auks.
The feeding events between St Ives Head and Clodgy Point were mobile, combining and fragmenting, before becoming isolated events. These events comprised up to 40 Gannet, 120 mixed gull, 20 Kittiwake, 220 auk, 20 Shag. The events off of Clodgy Point, dominated by Gannet and gulls, attracted the attention of a single Manx Shearwater and a Great Skua and an hour later a single Balearic Shearwater. All these events dispersed rapidly.
Throughout the bay and over to Clodgy Point there were approx 600 auks but these were primarily resting. In calm condition all 3 diver species were again mobile mid morning with a fly past of a group of six – 4 red and 2 black-throated, and pairs of Great Northern divers. The 1st winter Glaucous Gull was observed on Porthminster beach, whilst the 1st winter Iceland Gull joined the mixed gull feeding events north of the watchpoint. Hayle Estuary RSPB, Carnsew Pool: 1 Great Northern Diver, 6 Little Grebe, 1 Red-breasted Merganser, 1 Grey Plover and 1 Bullfinch. Lelant Water: 200 Dunlin, 11 Ringed Plover and 1 ad Mediterranean Gull. (D Flumm) Carnsew Basin: 1 Great Northern Diver.
