CBWPS announce 2014 Seabird Conference
Following on from the successful conference in 2011 we are pleased to announce that CBWPS will be running another joint conference in 2014, this time with a marine theme. ‘Birds in the Marine Environment – research from the South West and beyond’ sees CBWPS team up with the BTO and University of Exeter to stage a day of presentations, discussions and displays exploring seabird ecology and conservation. Featuring leading researchers in their field drawn from Exeter and other universities, BTO ecologists and local ornithologists engaged in seabird projects in the county the event promises to provide fresh insights into the complex lives of birds seen around our coast.
Dr Stephen Votier from the University of Exeter will talk about what tracking has revealed about the private life of Gannets whilst Bruce Taggart will be showing the first results from the Great Black-backed Gull colour ringing project on Looe Island. The RSPB team will outline work they are undertaking on the Isles of Scilly to support seabird recovery and Dr Russell Wynn will be back to update us on results from his on-going study of Balearic Shearwaters in south west waters. There will be poster displays, a photographic exhibition, and stands from NHBS, HandyKam, CWT, RSPB and the BTO.
CBWPS Trustees and BTO staff and county reps will be on hand to update you on what’s been happening in the county and there will be plenty of opportunities to catch up with old friends, not least over lunch which is included in the ticket price. ‘Birds in the Marine Environment’ takes place at the University of Exeter Cornwall Campus in Penryn on Saturday 22nd February. For more information go to www.bto.org/cornwall-conf.
Tickets are £20 per person (£10 student rate), which includes teas, coffees and a buffet lunch.
