Cornwall Birding Sites

Cornwall is renowned as a prime area in which to find rare, vagrant and scarce migrants in Spring and Autumn. However, there is much to be seen and areas to be explored throughout the year; some well-known and some lesser known sites. Click on the map below, or search for sites in the main body of the page below.

To use the interactive map above use the slider icon in the top left corner or click on any of the pins denoting birding sites in the county. Sites which have been completed are denoted by coloured pins – grey pins are of sites for which information has still yet to be added.

Sites below in bold green have been updated with information and should be live. Those just in bold are live but templates. ‘West Cornwall’ and ‘North Cornwall’ are also live pages – click on for that subgroup. When on a particular site on the website you can scroll left and right to other sites in the series (as you would for previous post etc on daily sightings). Numbers eg 11 are chosen as priority first phase sites (some flexibility), sites in red are sites that have been assigned and crossed out are completed.

The following 5 counties, out of the 11 southern England County Bird Club websites that I have looked at have an online site guide I could find (an additional 2, as well as Cornwall, have a gazetteer, listing all county sites with a grid ref)

Berkshire

http://berksoc.org.uk/countysites/

Essex

https://www.ebws.org.uk/index.php/bird-watching/map-of-essex

Hampshire

https://www.hos.org.uk/home/news-recording/hampshire-birding/hampshire-bird-sites/

Somerset

Wiltshire

I think that what we are planning will be more in-depth and informative than most of these. I’m hoping we can provide as good an experience, as well as being as user-friendly as the best of them too. (Not forgetting that we probably have 2 – 5 times more sites than most of these other counties, spread over a wider area).

(Not sure what systems all are using, but some may be third party google map programs like scribblemaps (free or paid for) or possibly specific programming.

The basic idea is a County-wide map highlighting all major birding sites with information, and also noting most minor/subsidiary sites too. These will be highlighted with pins/icons on the main map with further information, including a link to an item with access, description, species list and in many cases a further interactive map including more information and website links etc for all main sites at least.
