Ringing Recoveries

The BTO has recently produced the online ringing report for 2013. This includes totals of birds ringed in Cornwall in 2013 and also details of some of the movements reported during the year: http://blx1.bto.org/ring/countyrec/results2013/recGBCO2013.htm
These include:

  • Storm Petrels to/from Skokholm Island and also the Alderney (Channel Islands)
  • Shags from Scotland, Wales and Scilly
  • British Honey Buzzard and a Swedish Osprey
  • Ringed Plover from Norway to Davidstow in 12 days and a Curlew Sandpiper from Norway to Hayle in 14 days
  • Colour-ringed Black-headed Gulls from Norway, Latvia, Poland, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium and France
  • Migrant Woodpigeon making it to Scilly
  • Chiffchaff to Sweden
  • Sedge Warbler to Mauritania
  • Starlings from Lithuania and Russia

The ringing totals also show that more Great Black-backed Gulls were ringed in Cornwall in 2013 than any other British county, with nationally significant totals also for Moorhen, Woodcock, Green Sandpiper, Chough, Yellow-browed Warbler (our 19 only beaten by 29 in Orkney) and Grasshopper Warbler.
