Stithians Work Party 12th January 2019

The Ornithology Club’s first event on Saturday 12th January was a trip to Stithians Reservoir to help Cornwall Birds with some habitat management. After some hard work cutting back the sedges and other vegetation we then enjoyed some birding at the hides on the reservoir.

Before …

… After

Despite the drizzle and grey skies, we had a great turn out for our first event. Thanks to Dan from Cornwall Birds (working title of the CBWPS, Cornwall Bird Watching and Preservation Society) we helped with some habitat management at Stithians Reservoir. A first for almost all of us was scything to cut back the sedges, long grass and brambles to make the meadow suitable for the orchids which grow there, though by the end of the day we were all certified pros. It was great to see the fruits of our labour, and reward ourselves with a spot of birding around the reservoir.
