Lockdown Diary 4:

One of the regular winter spectacles to be found on the Camel estuary is the huge number of Golden Plover that gather on the mudflats. Some years there have been as many as 5,000 birds.

This week I spotted them from near Trewornan on the northern side of the estuary. Remarkably, many hundreds of the birds appear to almost vanish when parked together on the mud, but as they spill into the air, what a display they put on. Illuminated by low sunlight against the dark shadow of Cant Hill, they looked first a darkish brown, then a glowing white, and as they banked round again a sparkling gold like so much festive glitter tumbling out of the sky.

In June last year I almost stumbled across a Golden Plover on the moorland in the Western Isles of Scotland. It was in its fine breeding plumage, a handsome creature. Though they lose a lot of that vibrance out of season, in these great winter congregations Golden Plovers remain a glorious sight on a bright, chill day.
