Late news, 11/10, Porthleven: Wholly unconfirmed report. “I had been watching for about twenty minutes at the feeding frenzy which was taking place in front of me and I suddenly saw quite a few gannets arrive and were diving into the shoal of bait fish which by now was about 150 metres long and about 80 metres from the beach. I was then quite amazed to see three frigatebirds arrive and start feeding by skimming the water. I am sure that my report will seem quite unbelievable, but I watched them for about fifteen minutes through my binoculars. Their distinctive wing shape and forked tail first attracted my attention. Through my binoculars I could clearly see their markings, a dark body with white head, a black bar across the chest below the wings and a white belly. The beak was straight with a hooked end. I was exceptionally surprised to see them as I know that the nearest we could find them is the Caribbean or Florida.I watched them until the shoal of bait fish disappeared, when they and the gannets flew southward towards the Lizard.” (L Truswell)
Land’s End: Grey Catbird still present to 18:10 at least, but skulking. (finder G Mitchell) The bird was in a line of small willows at cSW352252 view only from NE side. Please stay on Treve Common, accessed along the footpath from Trevescan. All other surrounding fields are private and the landowner has politely but firmly asked birders to keep off. We will try and negotiate access tomorrow if necessary. A field has been opened for parking c40 metres on the right beyond the junction with the B3315, or use Land’s End car park the roads are too narrow and busy for safe on road parking and are mostly double yellows. Don’t be tempted to cut across the field, walk back to the junction and follow the track to the north onto Treve Moor and turn left to the bottom corner. Also be aware there are likely to be overnight road closures on the A30 beyond Penzance, expect diversions.
