St Ives Island: 1 Sandwich Tern and 4 Turnstone. An adult male Kestrel was hovering low over the grassy slope next to the Coastguard lookout and in the space of ten minutes caught three voles, two of which it deliberately took to grassy tussocks on the cliff just below where I was standing and hid the dead voles in the vegetation. On the first occasion I thought it had simply deserted the prey, perhaps disturbed by my close proximity but when it returned with a second vole a few minutes later and landed on another tussock c10m away I watched it push the animal into the grass with its beak in an obvious attempt to hide it. It then flew back to the long grassy slope to commence hovering again and within a minute had caught yet another vole which it took to a part of the cliff I couldn’t see but presumably to find somewhere to hide that too.  Although food caching by Kestrels is recorded by BWP, this is the first time I have seen it in 50 years’ birding and I was also surprised how quickly it caught all three animals.
