Bude Marshes: 1w Sociable Lapwing still present (wellingtons advised) also 2 Cattle Egret on the rugby pitch. (T Phillips) 2 Cattle Egret behind the marshes on rugby pitch. (Birdguides)

Update:  The Sociable Lapwing is “a Critically Endangered species that has undergone a rapid decline of more than 90% since the 1930s” (RSPB) and so for that reason we felt it important to determine whether Cornwall’s two sightings at 4 weeks and 70 miles apart were in fact the same bird. Admittedly, because of the rarity of the species it was going to be unlikely that it was two different individuals, and so that is what the photographs show. The same minute feather anomalies have appeared in photos from both Crows-an-Wra/Penwith and Bude Marshes. So just above the left eye is a small dark patch in what is otherwise the white supercilium. This patch isn’t present above the right eye but is present in pictures from both locations above the left eye. Secondly, on the upper right wing there is a pattern of white feathering in the primary coverts extending into the black wing tips that seems repeated in the two locations. And thirdly, there is a break in the centre of the black tail band, which can be seen only in the spread tail. Photographs from both locations show that break. Finally, thank you for all the extra photos received, they have definitely helped confirm that this is just one individual. Tony Mills; Assistant County Recorder.

Sociable Lapwing: we’re particularly interested in confirming whether or not the Bude Marshes bird is the same as the west Penwith one from a month ago. Please can any photographer send me their pictures (those not already submitted). I’m particularly interested in comparing upperwing flight shots and both left and right-side standing shots. These pictures do not need to be of publishable quality and can be cropped down to the bird only to reduce file size. But please do not over-process or reduce the size and please save at max jpeg size. Send to me, Tony Mills at tonymills@btinternet.com
